Northern Institute of Dance: Fostering Excellence in Ballet and Cultural Exchange

The Northern Institute of Dance is a charity ballet school located in Prince George, British Columbia. We are dedicated to nurturing and training aspiring professional dancers while enriching the northern BC region with the beauty of ballet. Our institute was founded by two highly educated professional dancers who are passionate about offering top-tier training to our students.

Our focus goes beyond mere technique; we instill in our students the professionalism and discipline required to thrive in the competitive world of professional ballet. One of our hallmarks is our emphasis on building professional productions in northern BC. From classical masterpieces to contemporary works, our dancers immerse themselves in every aspect of creating stunning ballet performances.

We also offer a unique cultural exchange program, where our most advanced dancers can travel to Brazil to collaborate with Promodanca, a renowned junior company. This experience is about understanding different artistic perspectives, forging international connections, and broadening cultural horizons. Last year, we raised $18,000 to cover the trip to Brazil. We would like to thank our sponsors, Iris Energy, Horizon Testing Inc, BCNE, Pampered Chef Canada, Viking Construction LTD, and Nechako Bottle Depot.

We are proud to support our dancers' international ambitions as they audition for and participate in prestigious international ballet competitions. These experiences not only showcase their talent but also elevate the reputation of northern BC on the global ballet stage. During the 2023-2024 season, we have three dancers representing Prince George in the Provincial competition and one student, Sylvie Swanson, representing Canada in the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida, in April 2024.

We rely on donations to fund ballet productions, cover rental costs for theatres and costumes, and facilitate travel for our dancers. Every contribution helps us continue our mission and expand our impact. Additionally, through our bursary programs, we provide opportunities for less fortunate dancers in Brazil to come train and study with us. This includes helping cover the costs of travel and academic fees, ensuring that talented individuals have access to world-class training regardless of their financial circumstances.

The Northern Institute of Dance aims to cultivate dancers who embody the positive culture and professionalism of ballet. We celebrate the artistry, dedication, and cultural enrichment that ballet brings to the northern BC community and beyond.
